Tree Health

Plant Health Care at Understory is centered on soil health, root function, and stress reduction. Research and field observation consistently show that a majority of tree health issues in urban and residential settings originate below ground. Compacted soils, poor drainage, nutrient imbalance, and root disturbance are often the primary drivers of decline.

Our PHC approach prioritizes improving growing conditions rather than masking symptoms. Treatments are selected based on site conditions, species needs, and observed stress factors, with the goal of restoring function and resilience over time.

Soil and Root Zone Assessment

We begin by evaluating soil structure, drainage, root flare visibility, and site impacts. Understanding what is happening below ground allows us to recommend appropriate, targeted interventions rather than default treatments.

Vertical Mulching

Vertical mulching is used to relieve compaction and improve oxygen and water movement within the root zone. This technique supports fine root development and is particularly effective in heavily trafficked or compacted soils.

Soil Amendments

Where appropriate, soil amendments are incorporated to improve structure, organic matter content, and biological activity. Amendments are selected based on site conditions and existing soil limitations rather than generalized application.

Deep Root Fertilization

Deep root fertilization is used selectively when nutrient deficiencies or site conditions warrant it. Applications are targeted and timed appropriately to support plant health without promoting excessive or weak growth.

Mulching and Root Collar Correction

Proper mulching and root collar exposure are critical to tree health. We correct improper mulch practices and address buried root flares that can contribute to decline, girdling roots, and disease.

Compaction and Stress Mitigation

We address physical and environmental stressors such as soil compaction, grading changes, and moisture issues. Reducing chronic stress improves a plant’s ability to defend against pests and disease naturally.

Monitoring and Long Term Care

Plant Health Care is not a one-time treatment. We provide ongoing observation and recommendations to adjust care as conditions change and trees respond.
